How and Why you need to double cleanse your skin during your skincare routine?

March 14, 2021

During the day many events occur impacting our very own shield: our skin. Whether it be from the pollution, the constant face picking and sorry to break it to you, but people’s spray of spit (gross I know…) leaving the skin with many impurities to be washed off. Well that last one shouldn’t be so much of an issue with the 6 foot distance rule installed nowadays. Actually since the covid other habits have created their fair share of skin problems. Wearing a mask being the biggest one. Indeed wearing a face mask creates a closed up habitat that increases the amount of moisture created on your skin. You probably have noticed how hard it can be to breathe in your mask and the amount of liquid that breathing in an occlusive environment can create. So an excess of moisture isn’t so much to be worried about when it’s during a short amount of time but an excessive amount of time wearing the face mask can often lead to breakouts and skin irritations.

There are different ways of dealing with these issues. And guess what? Adapting your skincare routine is definitely one of them.

The most important thing you should look out for is to keep your skin clean and moisturized. In this article we will show you exactly how the cleansing part of the skincare routine should be done effectively.

So … What is double cleansing?

I know what you’re thinking. “okay fine I’ll use twice as much of the same product and rinse my skin twice. Got it” but that’s not exactly what it’s about…

Double cleansing is not about washing your face twice. Double cleansing is a method to follow for a more thorough face wash using different products for different purposes.

Double cleansing means to first use a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water to break down the first layer of whatever is on your skin: be it make-up, sunscreen, dust but also sebum. This first cleanse also removes dead skin cells, bacterias etc.

The second part of double cleansing is to clean the skin with a deeper water-based cleanser. The water-based cleanser is here to clean the pores deeper and to remove existing  impurities.

How should you Double Cleanse?

As mentioned before, the first step of double cleansing is about removing any obvious impurities from your skin, especially if you are wearing makeup. It’s important to spend a specific amount of time making sure every single trace of your makeup is removed from your face.

First you want to use a cotton pad soaked in either a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water.

Then you want to be gentle with your skin and wipe your face. For the eyes, it’s best if you leave the soaked cotton pad rested on the eyes for a bit, just so the mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner or any other cosmetic products dissolve easily with the cleanser. Avoid rubbing too hard as this area is very sensitive.

Be sure to rub in the cleanser for at least 1 minute. That might seem like a lot of time but here’s an idea: you can use that time to recite some empowering/self love quotes while looking at yourself in the mirror. After all, this is your moment, between you and your thoughts. At times it can feel like mirrors can be hard on us, when in actuality it’s our own thoughts. So use that pampering moment to double cleanse the negative self-talk that appears when you look at your bare face in the mirror.
